About
Samba Mundial
Samba
Mundial- the South Bay's award winning samba
school, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
dedicated to community participation.
Samba Mundial's dancers and musicians perform
traditional Brazilian and African-inspired
dances and play Brazilian percussion
instruments.
The
group always welcomes new dancers and musicians
young or old, beginning or advanced.
Samba Mundial offers an enjoyable and rewarding
experience for all of its members.
Dance:
Students
learn to perform the great breadth of Brazilian
dances. Classes
include instruction in dances from Rio de Janeiro,
Bahia, Recife and other regions of Brazil.
Popular steps inspired by samba, samba reggae
and "Axe" music are also part of the
instruction.
Percussion:
Students work in two main styles: the
samba batucada and pagode music of Rio de
Janeiro and the Bahian-inspired samba reggae
beats. Bateria studies cover the agogô,
caixa, ganza, repinique, surdo and tamborim.
Pagode students learn the tantan, repique de
mão and pandeiro. Bahian music
is explored through the traditional hand
drums, congas and agogô. Experienced
and novice musicians are invited. Instruments
can be provided.
Performing
Group:
Recent
performances have included the San Francisco Carnaval
parade, Santa Cruz "We Carnival"
parade, Redwood City's 4th of July parade,
Santa Cruz Iemanja Festival, "Carnaval Nights"
at the Portuguese Club in San Jose and Stanford's
International Week. Other events have included
modern/contemporary dance pieces for the "One
Minute Show" at Your Local Gallery in Oakland,
"Works in the Works" and "Element-Terra"
which is an interpretive dance project about the
indigenous people of the Amazon.
The
group is available for parades, festivals, corporate/private
parties and many other events.
