Sambão Board Meeting, July 10, 2002
-----------------------------------

These are the minutes of the Sambão Board of Directors meeting held
at the Mountain View Recreation Center, Wednesday July 10, 2002,
from 8:45 to 9:45 PM.

Present were:

Glenn Evans
Brad Hamilton
Craig Lawson
Christelle Mounguengué
Lisa Ruiz
Ted Syrett
Aki Ueno

Ted called the meeting to order at 8:45 PM in Glenn's absence.  The
minutes of the previous meeting had been distributed earlier via email
and posted on Sambão's web site.  The minutes were accepted as posted.
Glenn arrived after the start of the meeting.

Old Business

1.  Event coordinator

There was no progress to report on this item.

2.  Morale building

Not having heard back from Jim Holdrergger (Hollebreaker?), our Tapestry
in Talent contact, regarding use of C.R.E. Uniao Brasileira facilities
for a monthly get-together, Brad went ahead and spoke with Jefferson
Silveira about being our Portuguese-speaking C.R.E. contact.  Having
Jefferson's agreement to do this for us, Brad sent a memo to Jose Carlos
stating Sambão's desires and naming Brad and Jefferson as contacts.

3.  Upcoming events

Brad reported that the Big Basin gig on Saturday, July 27, has been
cancelled.  There was some discussion of how soon we can begin rehearsals
for the Sunday, August 4 event in Redwood City.  Brad has posted some
tentative upcoming gigs on the Bateria site, including one at Cañada
College the last weekend of September 2002.  Christelle suggested that
we plan to participate in the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival next
year.  This is a ten-minute stage show but the competition is fierce.
In past years one winner has been Tanya Santiago, a former Olodum star.

4.  Financial matters

Glenn reported that he and Craig have been added as signatories on Sambão's
checking account.  He requested that Craig open a P.O. box to which the bank
statements could be mailed.

5.  Guidelines for cooperation with other groups

Discussion of this item was tabled due to lack of understanding of the issue.

6.  Sambão legacy references on BCA's web site

Ted reported that he had spoken with Beicola on the evening of July 4.
Beicola was about to depart for a month in Brazil, but agreed to work
with Ted once Beicola returns and is sufficiently caught up.  The main
point is that Beicola agrees in principle that the references should
be cleaned up, and in practice is willing to have Ted help with this.

7.  Navigation of our web site

Brad will discuss with Nicole how this can be improved.

New Business

1.  Redwood City parade results

Christelle brought materials mailed to her by the Peninsula
Celebration Association regarding Sambão's participation in
the Redwood City Independence Day Parade.  These included a
certificate (lacking our name) of first place in the Novelty
category, and a check for $100 with our name misspelled in
amusing fashion (missing the 'ã').  Ted took the certificate
and agreed to try to have Sambão's name and logo imprinted
on it so that it will be suitable for framing.

2.  S.F. Carnaval 2002 awards ceremony

Glenn reported that he is checking with the S.F. Carnaval
committee regarding an awards ceremony, and trying to correct
the egregious (not amusing!) misspelling of our name in the
emailed reports of the standings.  He also suggested polling
our membership to find out who would like to perform at the
awards ceremony, when and if one is scheduled.

3.  A place for our awards

Between the S.F. Carnaval and the Redwood City parade, the
post-BCA version of Sambão already has several awards worth
noting.  Glenn suggested that we begin looking for a place
to put them on public display, with the Mountain View Recreation
Center being the obvious choice until it is torn down early
next year.

Next Meeting

We agreed to meet again at the Mountain View Recreation Center next
Wednesday,  July 17, 2002, at 8:30 PM.

The meeting adjourned at 9:45 PM.
