Sambão Board Meeting, Oct. 19, 2002
-----------------------------------

These are the minutes of the Sambão Board of Directors
meeting held at Joao's Restaurant in Santa Clara, Saturday
Oct. 19, 2002, from 8:15 to 10:15 PM.  The meeting was
preceded by a most enjoyable dinner.  Rick Godinez and
Lori Llanillo joined us for the dinner but could not stay
for the meeting.

Present were:

Fernando Armenta
Behfar Bastani
Glenn Evans
Brad Hamilton

Glenn called the meeting to order at 8:15 PM.  The minutes
of the previous meeting had been posted on Sambão's web site.
They were accepted as posted.  Brad moved, and we agreed
unanimously, to defer all old business in favor of a new
agenda presented by Glenn.

on this.  He will pursue this as time permits.

 7.  Navigation of our web site

Ted spoke with the Mtn. View Rec. Dept. about a suitable
place to display Sambão's awards and was told nothing
was available.

See new business item 3 below.

10.  Grant requests

Nothing new to report.

New Business

Glenn's agenda was:
    1.  Our relationship with Cristina going forward.
    2.  Planning for the Halloween fundraiser at CRE.
    3.  The Carnaval 2002 awards ceremony in S.F.
    4.  Volunteers for the telephone tree.
    5.  Financial report.

1.  Relationship with Cristina

This topic was discussed at length, with contributions
from everyone around the table.  Craig had brought an
informal proposal from Cristina listing various roles
she might play in helping Sambão work toward a goal of
bringing our performing group to a semi-professional
level, as defined by being able to charge $1,000 or
more per performance.

Some people felt that this was not even a realistic
goal for Sambão at this point in its evolution, but
this opinion was far from unanimous.  More widely
shared was the judgment that the fees that Cristina
would need to be paid for serving any of the roles
she had listed are beyond Sambão's means, given our
current financial status.  A third point, emphasized
by Brad, is that there are very few gigs available
in our area that pay upwards of $1,000, regardless
of how well-qualified the performing group may be.
He stressed that there are more (not many, but more)
at roughly the $500 level, and there is less compe-
tition for those.

2.  Halloween fundraiser

Lisa volunteered to take responsibility for
decorations.

3.  Awards ceremony

Glenn distributed specifics of the planned awards
ceremony in San Francisco.

4.  Telephone tree

This agenda item was bypassed, in view of the
long time spent on item 1, so that we could get
to the financial report.

5.  Financial report

Glenn is continuing to work on organizing our
financial records in preparation for turning
them over to Craig so that he can begin acting
as Treasurer in fact as well as in name.
